Abstract

In the article The Evolution of Andrzej Barański’s Film Work, the main question is: did Andrzej Barański, as the director, ever modify the style of his films? At this moment, I do not consider the change that followed after he finished his education at the Film School (comparing his student studies and the television debut W domu – ang. At Home). The subject of my analysis is feature films exclusively. I consciously omitted Barański’s television theatre shows, some of which are true masterpieces, like Siedem pięter (ang. Seven Floors), documentaries and animation films, which are not Barański’s domain even though they outnumber his feature films. The focal point of my essay is Barański’s last feature film so far, Księstwo (Heritage, 2011). It seems that, retrospectively, a closer look at this film can reveal a quite radical change of the artist’s style. Even though in Księstwo, Barański repeats some of his previously developed patterns, he chose a completely different storytelling convention. The fundamental difference is linked to poetics of cinema, which can be historically-conditioned. This means that Barański is willing to start the dialogue with contemporary times.
