Abstract

The traditional role of the newspaper publishers was to mediate between the content producers, information users, advertisers and other concerned interest groups. Meanwhile, over the last two decades, there has been a significant change in the media ecosystem. The (r)evolution has influenced gatekeepers, producers and consumers. The increasing significance of new technologies and the consequent decline of newspaper readership has led publishers to the introduction of the digital offer – most commonly free of charge – firstly on desktop computers and then also on mobile devices. It did not result in an increase in the range of users, which has consequently led to a further loss of advertising market share and income. Currently, publishers are losing not only their incomes but also their influence on the shaping of the public opinion. It is the providers of new technologies who now have influence on the public access as well as on the shape and quality of journalism.
