Deep into the matter – on semantic network and polysemious nature of the word deep

Abstract
The paper analyses a number of various meanings of the word deep emphasizing its
polysemious nature. Thanks to highlighting central and peripheral meanings it shows
how the meanings are connected and therefore create a semantic network. The use
of metaphor in decoding the meaning of a word enabled us to find justification for certain
uses, thus, metaphor has become a central tool used in the analysis. The meanings have
been collected from dictionaries of contemporary English, taking both the American and
the British versions of the language into account. The paper has been written in the light
of cognitive linguistics and has used corpus, qualitative and quantitative method.
