Individual vehicle registration markings in Poland: a case on the borderline of propriality and appellativity
Artur Gałkowski
Uniwersytet ŁódzkiAbstract
The article discusses markings on individual vehicle registration plates in Poland
as a linguistic phenomenon on the interface between propriality and appellativity.
This type of linguistic creations have a naming nature, fulfilling a utilitarian function
in administrative and general communication. Authors of individual registration marks
are obliged to use a predetermined composition pattern, which admits the inclusion
of relatively arbitrary lexical and alphanumeric distinctive elements. A corpus of such
marks was subjected to onomastic and lexicological formation analysis, establishing
formal and motivational construction classes of creatively composed vehicle “numbers”.
The information coded in individual markings is part of the “mobile linguistic landscape”
of contemporary public space.
