The problem of the evil in the reflections of Hannah Arendt and Emmanuel Lévinas
Abstract
The purpose of this article is to discuss the concepts used by Hannah Arendt and Emnanuel Lévinas to capture the specificity of evil caused by human beings. In Arendt’s case, it is the category of “the banality of evil”. For Lévinas, it is “the face of the other”. The crimes of the Second World War are the basic context of the authors’ reflections. They provide the starting point for a deeper analysis of the causes of the disappearance of individual responsibility for the “common world”. In a comparative analysis, the article shows some similarities and differences between the above-mentioned thinkers. What Arendt and Lévinas have in common is their attention to the consequences of neglecting individual axiological reflection. The absence of such reflection leads to uncritical submission to the law of the state. The fundamental difference between the authors discussed is that for Arendt the main cause of evil is the neglect of the relationship with oneself. Lévinas, on the other hand, saw the main cause of evil in the rupture of the relationship with what he symbolically called the face of the other. The authenticity of this relationship underlines the importance of an ethics in which concern for others, especially those who suffer, is paramount.
