Abstract

In the 18th century, Filipów and Przerośl were located in the eastern province of the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth - the Grand Duchy of Lithuania. They were subject to Grodno County and Trakai Voivodeship. The border with Prussia ran nearby. Filipów received city rights in 1570, and Przerośl in 1576. City authorities and starosty offices operated here. Local courts were organized. The townspeople could also appeal to the court in Grodno. Town halls operated in these centers from the second half of the 16th century. The seat of the city authorities in Filipów from the mid-18th century had at least two floors. In Przerośl, the town hall was located in the central part of the market square. The town halls in both cities were wooden. Both cities had coats of arms given to them by Polish kings. Filipów had a symbol of cancer. In turn, Przerośl had the symbol of a lion. City seals were also created. These images are still used today. In the 18th century, Przerośl was a larger town.
