Abstract

Father Jan Długosz, known as the most outstanding historiographer of medieval Poland, is rarely perceived as a cleric. However, many of his actions were inspired by the fact that he was a cleric. Tracing his path to priesthood and subsequent stages of life up to the royal nomination to the Lviv archbishopric was the aim of this article. The Polish Liwiusz is an example of a medieval cleric who lived to see the highest church dignities. Slowly, with the passage of time, he accepted individual degrees of ordination, which opened the way for him to various benefices, dignities and church offices. Thanks to his own abilities and protection, he received benefices from which he derived numerous incomes. He allocated a significant part of them to purposes that today we would describe as charitable activities, charity and patronage.
