Abstract

This article is an attempt to analyse selected opinions which, in the period of several months after its adoption, shaped the image of the Constitution of 3 May among the Polish-Lithuanian society. It traces the statements of direct witnesses to the events of 3 May 1791, showing the level of emotion accompanying the adoption of the new law. It shows the arguments used by both sides of the political dispute in the period preceding the February 1792 regional assemblies, which were important in the context of legalising the constitution. An attempt was made to illustrate the level of political emotion, the way of thinking, the skillfulness of the arguments used, and finally, the attitudes and value systems characteristic of both hostile parties, which were part of their political programmes. The positions and assessments cited in the article shaped the opinion of the nobility and developed political culture, but at the same time showed the divergence between the supporters and opponents of the newly enacted law, which would ultimately lead to tragic events, such as the Targowica Confederation, the war with Russia in defence of the constitution, and the second partition of the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth.
