Abstract

The world of a woman in love revolves around her beloved man. The beloved man is her first thought when she wakes up and the last thought before she falls asleep, because he is the centre of her universe. These words hold true for Joanna Potocka (family crest Pilawa Srebrna) of Krzeszowice and her beloved Stanisław Potocki (family crest Pilawa Złota) of Chrzastowo.

Joanna’s letters to Stanisław document her feelings. Their correspondence covers the period of their engagement, and Stanisław is portrayed as the ideal man. The fact that the future spouses had known each other previously and that their families were related played a significant role. Stanisław Potocki was a handsome man who was well built and, above all, wealthy and educated. The planned marriage would bring splendor to both families, and was a long-awaited social event. Stanisław Potocki served as a model of an ideal man, fiancé, and husband, and he set the benchmark for males in families of landed gentry with similar origin and wealth.
