Abstract

The District Security Office (DSO) in Kętrzyn was established in July 1945. The repressive measures of the communist security apparatus were addressed mainly against the Catholic Church and the enemies of the regime. The authorities suspected that not all residents of the Kętrzyn District supported the regime and, therefore, could pose a threat to communist rule. With the progressing sovietization of Poland and the expansion of the repression apparatus, increasingly more activities were recognized as reactionary or as acts of social resistance. The DSO officers from Kętrzyn followed the official guidelines to expand the network of secret agents and closely monitor various social groups. As a result, those suspected of insurgent activities were arrested, and the communist courts served severe prison sentences. During the totalitarian regime, terror was fundamental in the process of subjugating the society to authoritarian rule.
