Abstract

In 1967, the US Army initiated wide-reaching military operations in South Vietnam which relied on the “search and destroy” strategy. American and South Vietnamese troops targeted communist sanctuaries. On 8 January 1967, 1st, 4th, and 25th Infantry Divisions, 173rd Airborne Brigade, 11th Armored Cavalry Regiment, and 196th Infantry Brigade began Operation “Cedar Falls” to eradicate the socalled “Iron Triangle”, a major communist stronghold north of Saigon. The operation attracted the interest of Polish military intelligence. The article aims to determine the extent to which the reports generated by the Second Department of Polish General Staff were true, and what types of information about Operation Cedar Falls were fabricated or never disclosed.
