Abstract

The article examines the symbolism of the swan

as an embodiment of the sacred within the Young

Poland literary movement, centering on the works

of Bogusław Butrymowicz and Wacław Wolski.

It portrays the swan as both a representation

of spirituality and the concept of eternal recurrence, as well as a figure rooted in decadent and

grotesque aesthetics. The analysis reflects on the

evolving interpretations of the sacred in literary

studies, drawing on the philosophies of Schopenhauer, Nietzsche, and Kierkegaard. Addition

ally, the study investigates connections between

swan symbolism and domains such as alchemy,

mythology, and classical literature. Advocating

for interdisciplinary inquiry, the paper highlights

the motif’s positioning at the intersection of the

sacred and the profane. It underscores the motif’s largely untapped potential, emphasizing its

significance for cultural and literary scholarship.
