The article presents basic thesis of Georg Simmel’s philosophy of culture. His ideas were described in essays and never had a closed, systematized form. Simmel comprehends culture as a phenomenon of human development. The essence of this advancement is the crossing of all individual, subjective conditions and simultaneously the individual assimilation of all objectivized humans formations. Simmel considers permanent relation between live and culture and its spiritual forms. He shows the conflict between the various forms and between the forms and life. According to Simmel, contradiction and conflict are the fundamental qualities of contemporary culture.
