Abstract

The ideal image of Sweden as a welfare state has increasingly become obscured by reports of problems with Swedish immigrants. Swedish filmmakers have also started to explore this issue. One of the more interesting observations was made by Ruben Östlund in his film entitled Play (2011). Equally intriguing figures of immigrants also appeared in the so-called Immigrant movies, for example, the Snabba cash trilogy. The characters of these films were able to use the image of the immigrant as well as the specific characteristics of the Swedish character (associated with so-called Jante law) to benefit personally. Immigrant films and the current situation in Sweden shows that this country will soon have to change and this change may be caused by immigrants.
The aim of this article is to present the very original images of immigrants which are present in Swedish cinema. The film is also a kind of a starting point for considering the changing situation of immigrants in modern Swedish society.
