Abstract

The author of the article discusses Jacques Aumont’s image theory as his most important concept. According to Alicja Helman, Aumont does not replace older theories with a new one. Instead, he proposes a kind of synthetic theory based on his own ideas and on selected earlier concepts. In a new context, they reveal new qualities and become polemic, which results in a dialogue between the authors – who had never directly talked with one another. Film image is the main focus of Aumont’ studies. However, he goes beyond discussing its position in a greater family of images and sticks to the visual domain, refraining from discussing other senses. The French author understands existing theories of the image as a synchronic area of coexisting concepts, which can either contradict one another or become compatible.
