Krzysztof Zanussi’s film work has got, in great measure, a meditative character. The director often ponders difficult philosophical, even theological we could say, issues in his films. Determination – biological or divine – is one of important motifs of his meditation. The director is asking, to what extent man is conditioned and how he is conditioned. He is referring to biological and medical conditioning which seems to contradict divine, providential conditioning. Moreover, he indicates the problem in noting free will in the human condition, since man is determined either biologically or metaphysically. And the film Gdzieśkolwiek jest, jeśliś jest… (Wherever you are…) is a story precisely about this. Whether the beautiful and delicate protagonist of this work is a crazy saint or an oversensitive, ill person? With this question, the director leaves the spectator behind without a reply.
