The term of «love» in Polish and French proverbs. An analysis from the perspective of the cognitive linguistics
Abstract
The objective of this article is a linguistic analysis of the terms “amour” in French and
”miłość” in Polish on the basis of proverbs in the two languages. The methodology of the
analysis is taken from cognitive linguistics, particularly from the research of Mark L.
Johnson, George P. Lakoff and Ronald W. Langacker. The ideal cognitive models (ICM)
of the term ”love” in Polish and French was distinguished. The proverbs in Polish and
French related to ”love” were divided into groups. Basic metaphors which determine the
prototypical models and the peripheral models of the terms ”amour” and ”miłość” in French
and Polish, respectively were indicated.
