Nominal inflection of contemporary Polish – a simplification or the beginning of the collapse of the case system?

The turn of the 20th and 21st centuries witnessed huge, previously unknown transformations
of the Polish nominal inflection, especially in the category of nouns and numerals.
Thus the objective of the article is to determine whether it is just a simplification of the
language’s case system, or it is the beginning of its collapse. The research material includes
both common words and proper nouns in the written and spoken variant of Polish.
The analysis of this material and a wide scope of the phenomenon make it possible
to propose a thesis that a new pattern of the Polish nominal inflection is being shaped,
and that the ongoing simplification of the language’s case system is the beginning
of a broader process and profound changes in the Polish inflection system, which may
result in abandoning declension altogether in the future.
