The role of provenance in authenticating artworks
Abstract
The art market is opaque and legally unregulated. The procedure for authenticating works of art, as well as the procedures for their attribution or valuation and the activities of market participants, are not subject to any standards, which, combined with the high value of the market, encourages crime, especially forgeries. The work presents the importance of provenance in the context of other methods of verifying the authenticity of works of art. Its role has changed over time: initially, it was considered of little importance in comparison with the opinion of recognized experts or the signature, but recently, it has been treated as a priority. The aim of the article is to show that there is no basis for this: provenance is an important element of the authentication process, but it should not replace other methods—it should be used in conjunction with them. Classical authentication methods should be supplemented with new solutions, especially the development and dissemination of international databases. The more comprehensively the authentication process is conducted, the more certain it will be.
