The Miracle as ‘Saturated Phenomenon’. Jean-Luc Marion’s Perspective of Thought

The purpose of the article is to present an understanding of the miracle in the context of the concept of the ‘saturated phenomenon’ by the French philosopher of religion Jean-Luc Marion. The analysis consists of three main parts. In the first, Marion’s understanding of the miracle as a sign (of God making the impossible possible) and a phenomenon (characterised by an excess of content) will be presented against the background of the other approaches. In the second, the main features of the concept of the saturated phenomenon are presented (gratuitousness of the gift, appearance, excess of intuition over intention, types of saturated phenomena). In the third, the interpretation of this phenomenon in the context of the issue of the miracle is addressed (endless hermeneutics, the power of interpretation as a subjective criterion for its acceptance, the primacy of subjectivising interpretation over objectivising one).
