The Fate and Character of Creon from Sophocles’ “Theban Trilogy” in the Context of Aristotle’s Determinants of Tragedy

Abstract
The article is devoted to a comparative analysis of the model theory of tragedy presented by Aristotle in Poetics with the tragedy of the character and fate of Creon from Sophocles’ “theban trilogy”. The authors note that the figure of Creon outlined by Sophocles and the development of events in which it participates correspond to Aristotle’s concept of the cathartic function of tragedy in two simultaneous dimensions. The viewer is “cleansed” of the feeling of fear due to the appropriate characterological features of hero. On the other hand, the viewer is “healed” with pity as a result of following the sequence of events with the participation of Kreon, as well as their consequences.
