Political Development of the British Colonies in the Caribbean for the Westminster Model (1931-1944) (Jamaica)

Abstract

This article analyzes the political development of Jamaica from 1931 to 1944. The political development of Jamaica can be characterized by the Statute of Westminster 1931 and Westminster model of governance colonies on the example of the British possessions in the Caribbean. The article further studies political parties and movements in Jamaica and their impact on colonial society. The turning point in the political history of Jamaica was the adoption of the Constitution of 1944, which introduced universal suffrage. Jamaica was the most politically and economically powerful colony in the British Caribbean.
