Abstract

The submitted article is an attempt to present the origin of the political alliance of Antigonus Monophthalmus and Demetrios Poliorcetes in the end period of the Diadoch Wars, as well as the conse- quences of this alliance. Pyrrhus was lucky to grow up at the time when his family relation to Alexander the Great made him a lucrative party for expanding dynastic influence. A turning point in the search for a Pyrrhus’s protector was his return to Epirus (307 BC) from the court of the Glaucias, the king of Taulan- tians. The author maintains that Pyrrhus, apparently an unimportant supporter of Antigonus, was noted during the battle of Ipsos (301 BC) and became a serious player in the strugglefor power in the Hellenic world. The author argues that the events which took place in years 307-301 BC had a major impact  on Pyrrhus’s later decisions and, more importantly, his ability to implement them. The political bonds between Pyrrhus and Antigonus were a springboard for developing other alliances, opening Pyrrhus’s way to the house of Ptolemy to establish relations with new dynasties representing a key location in the political strategies of the Hellenic period. This issue leads to considerations concerning the subordination of Pyrrhus to the political influence exerted from the court in Alexandria, which follows from his further endeavours, particularly the war against Rome.
