Die Rezeption des Dogmas der Unfehlbarkeit des Bischofs von Rom im Ermland

By announcing the dogma of the papal primacy and infallibility on 18 July 1870, the Vatican Council I made an impact on the Church and its relations with the world in the late 19th century. Proponents of the new doctrine saw it as an opportunity to restore the Church’s authority. Its opponents saw a danger of breaking with a long tradition and introducing the papal authoritarian rule to the community of faith. Bishop Philip Krementz of Warmia was a member of the Council opposition. However, after the dogma was announced, he accepted it and later defended it in his diocese. The theological circles in Braniewo did not approve of the truth and propagated ideas that gave rise to the Old Catholic Church. This was a source of a serious pastoral conflict within the Church as well as outside it in relations with the Prussian authorities. Ultimately, the Bishop of Rome’s infallibility became widely accepted in Warmia.
