Dispute over the Philosophy of Ortega y Gasset

Mieczysław Jagłowski

Abstract

The paper presents the philosophy of J. Ortega y Gasset viewed as a matter of dispute that is carried on in the circles of Spanish philosophers. Three main elements of this dispute have been separated, i.e. the problem of originality, continuity and system of Ortega’s thought. J. Marias’ attitude towards the question was adopted as a point of reference. This philosopher identifies his views with Ortega’s theoretical position and believes Ortega to have been a fully original thinker, whose thought formed a coherent whole. Marias’s point of view was in the paper compared with the opinions of some other philosophers taking part in the dispute. It enabled to draw the conclusion that Marias’ attitude is characterized by certain exaggeration, and to state that the way of thinking represented by Ortega resulted from objective intellectual conditions that prevailed in Spain at the time when he formulated his views.
