The Beginnings of the Sports Movement

Jerzy Urniaż

Abstract

The early beginnings of post-war in the province of Olsztyn were determined by problems of political, economic and demographic nature. Arriving settlers contributed differentiated manner and national consciousness. Sport was supposed to help newly formed Warmia and Mazurian society in integration. Sports sections, clubs and associations, which were the outcome of social venture, came into being on the basis of pre – war Polish models. The driving force of that model was the intelligentsia that arrived mainly from Wilno and Warsaw. The emphasis was put on universal values of sport, that was also supposed to be a form of amusement and competition, and also help with mental and physical relaxation after the trauma of World War II.
