Stanislaus Osio as Preacher. Characteristic Features of the Lenten Sermons of the Bishop of Warmia in 1553

Stanisław Hosius (1504–1579) as bishop of Warmia devoted himself to the apostolate of pen and preaching, which became an arena of the struggle for Christian truth in the face of threats to the Catholic Church arising from the Protestant Reformation. Evidence of the future cardinal’s commitment to the defense of Catholicism is provided by the texts of his sermons, which he prepared to be delivered during Lent in 1553 in Elbląg and which have been preserved to this day. In the article, these sermons, written by Hosius in the German language of his time, form the basis for presenting the characteristic features of his style of preaching the Word of God. From the analysis of the texts, it emerges that their author polemicizes with Protestant opinions, defending the Catholic approach to the sacraments, especially the Eucharist. For this purpose he uses biblical, historical, theological and intellectual arguments. Exposing the errors of the Reformers, Hosius enters into dialogue with them, making use of his erudition and deep knowledge of the Christian tradition. His ministry of the Word is
inspired by the best biblical and patristic models. For this reason, he can be considered an eminent defender of the Catholic faith as well as a supporter of apostolic and biblical preaching.
