In 1831, a garrison was created in Susz. Considering this, since 1832, the rector of Dzierzgoń celebrated Masses twice a year in the Evangelical church in Susz. Since 1856, Masses were celebrated in this place four times a year. Monthly clerical services in Susz were initiated on 15th May 1861. A few years later, in 1867, a building was bought for 1,500 thalers, where an apartment for the local priest was located, as well as a temporary classroom and a chapel. The costs of the acquisition of the property were covered by the diocesean committee of the Boniface and Adalbert Association in Pelplin. The first priest of Susz, Franz Albert Loeper, was appointed on 20th June 1870, thanks to a declaration of the St. Boniface Association in Dorsten, which pledged to assign 300 thalers a year for a period of 10 years for the priest’s remuneration. At that time, about 230 Catholics (including 40 soldiers) lived in the discussed area. A private Catholic school in the described place was founded on 13th of April 1871. At first, 15 children were educated there. In 1872, Catholics living in Zalewo were placed under the care of F. Loeper. During the first few years of activity, the pastoral institution of Susz was denied the rights of a parish by the state authorities. As a result, the plans to build a local temple were temporarily abandoned.
