Ecological Awareness in Poland in the Light of Social Research

Janusz Krzysztof Gąsecki

Abstract

The causes of environmental degradation lie in the lack of ecological awareness among people, which finds its expression in their attitudes towards the problem and lack of responsibility for the state of natural environment.

The concept of ecological awareness has not been fully systematized yet. Its essence is discussed by representatives of numerous scientific disciplines. The paper includes an attempt to systematize the concept of ecological awareness, to show its complexity and relationships with empirical reality – studied by humanists. The paper presents both theoretical aspects of understanding ecological awareness and the results of sociological research aimed at determining its present state in Poland. The results of own investigations conduced among the students of Agricultural Universities constitute an important part of analyses discussed.
