Deep Ecology of Arne Naess – the Vision of Pantheistic Religion of the Modern World

Piotr Kozioł

Abstract

The article presents and describes deep ecology as one of the most popular notions of philosophy of ecology of today, which was created by Arne Naess. Deep ecology is a system of thought which is based on many philosophical notions as well as religious ideas. There are also striking similarities between pantheism, which is called ,,the green ecology”, and deep ecology.

Both pantheism and deep ecology openly criticize anthropocentrism which puts man in the position superior to all the remaining parts of nature.

They perceive the world as an indivisible, integral union. The Universe, in the light of these notions, is perceived as something more than a collection of its elements since we can see its sublime meaning that induces us to experience: delight, admiration, adoration, worship, contemplation and ectasy.

The concepts represented by the greatest pantheists, such as Heraklit, Spinosa and Whitehead had a considerable influence on the process of development of deep ecology, which puts it on the same level of importance as pantheism.
