Abstract

In this paper, the possible theoretical perspectives of conducting research on locality/ regionality within three contemporary social theories are outlined. The presented theories deal with the key role of the notion of communication: Manuel Castells’s theory of communication society and actor-network theory and Niklas Luhmann’s theory of social systems. Despite clear differences, the above-mentioned concepts have at least three important characteristics that pose a common theoretical plane for reflection: each of them emphasizes the processuality of society, the role of communication and focuses its attention on the production of meanings – social meanings. Each of these characteristics makes it possible to constitute an interesting research field for undertaking studies on locality/regionality within various humanities and social disciplines. This paper is only a contribution to the formulation of such a research project; the main objective is to draw
the attention of researchers of locality for the possibilities and theoretical tools that the above-mentioned concepts offer
