General Józef Bem and His Participation in the Preparations for the Defence of Warsaw in August and September, 1831

Tomasz Strzech

Abstract

Józef Bem was one of the most outstanding officers of the November uprising age. He played a significant role in building of the Warsaw defensive system shortly before the battle that proved to be decisive as far as the results of the uprising are concerned. Two crucial links of the city defensive system, ie exterior earthworks and artillery, were under his command. Making his soldiers ready to fight, he used his skills, knowledge and experience acquired in the course of military service (eg during the defence of Gdańsk in 1813). However, his efforts turned out to be insufficient. Both during the preparations and the battle itself, Bem made numerous mistakes which seem to be connected, among others, with his personal features.
