Abstract

One of the dimension to the great social and cultural change started in 1989 in Poland under the banner of modernization and westernization was the change of religious and national identity of Poles. For the last two centuries of the modern nation the religious and national identity of Poles became so close that they were considered as one. This issue has a theoretical and an historical aspect. The theoretical aspect refers to sociological theories perceiving religion as a correlate of national identity and a core value of national culture. The practical aspect emphasizes the inevitability of the process of secularization as a threshold to modernity.
