Abstract

The purpose of this paper is to analyze the issue of conceptual discontinuity of Carey’s model of acquiring the accurate number representations (i.e. bootstrapping). First part of the text is an overview of the key positions of cognitive arithmetic. Second part of the paper aims to present the main assumptions of the bootstrapping process, while third part is devoted to critical analysis of the concept of discontinuity of Carey’s theory of learning. The aim of the paper is to prove that learning process proposed by Carey can’t be accounted as a procedure of developing the system of representation, which is discontinuous to the innate systems of core knowledge.

Keywords:

Bootstraping, concept of exact number, parallel individuation system (PIS), approximate number system (ANS), generative grammar, conceptual discontinuity
