Abstract

The paper considers some problems of utilitarianism. Author presents brief description of the theory. The part of it is a division on actutilitarianism and rule-utilitarianism. The main subject of the article are arguments formulated by opponents of this doctrine and answers of its advocates. One of the problem of utilitarianism is that it is too demanding about persons and their acts. Another difficulty is that the theory is unable to predict further than direct consequences of a particular act. Next problem is a contradiction between some kinds of utilitarian requirements and elementary moral intuitions, for example not to harm or not to kill innocent people. The classic version of utilitarianism is also charged with hedonism. The last considered problem of the doctrine created by Bentham and Mill is its paying no sufficient attention to unique status of persons and to distributive justice.
