Abstract

The article aims to analyze the possibility of the functioning of Wales as an independent state without the supervision of the government in London and independently of the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland and to present the results of surveys related to the formation of the national identity of the Welsh people. Wales, Scotland and Northern Ireland were granted a wide range of autonomy as a result of the devolution reform initiated in 1998. The asymmetry of devolution, thanks to which the above-mentioned components gained new competencies and powers, allows for the formulation of a conclusion that each case is different and that each case should be dealt with individually. The study discusses the case of Wales in
terms of decentralization of its systemic and legal processes. The analysis of the latest polls as well as the most important political events in the history of Wales led to the conclusion that Wales does not pose a threat to the integrity of the United Kingdom, neither now nor in the distant future. In addition, due to the departure of Great Britain from the European Union, Wales may become a creation even more dependent and dependent on England, which may start the process of regression of Welsh economic and economic potential.
