The Illusion of Mechanistic Reason : Evolution, Determinism, Entropy and Anthropic Principle in Axiological Perspective

Mikołaj Niedek

Abstract

This article is a critical response to an essay by Professor Zdzisława Piątek: The Anthropocentric illusion and eco-philosophy, in which she proposes the scientificobjectivist version of the anthropic principle. While accepting old-fashioned premises of mechanistic determinism, she argues against teleological thrust of eco-philosophy. The author of the present article shows that this mechanistic/deterministic paradigm is based on hidden assumptions, which make it all too easy for scientific determinism to dismiss other approaches. Recent advances of science and philosophy allow for differen interpretations, including teleological and especially of evolutionary-transcendent ones, which are at the basis of eco-philosophy.
