The Crisis of Ecology as a Crisis of the Culture

Mikołaj Niedek

Abstract

The article argues that there is a close relationship between the reflection on the crisis of culture and the present ecological crisis. The main thesis of the article is that the cultural and ecological crisis of our times are aspects of the same fundamental crisis. In order to overcome it, we need to create a new system of values, which will enable us to transcend the presently dominating materialist-consumptive values. The author’s specific focus is a comparative analysis of the approach of the Polish philosopher and sociologist, Florian Znaniecki, with the present debates within ecological circles. The author suggests that Eco-philosophy, conceived as a holistic interdisciplinary matrix, could by a useful tool for the understanding of the present crises as well as overcoming them, especially on the ecological level. Such an approach, via Eco-philosophy, will not only enable us to understand the present situation but also construct future scenarios within which we can make diagnoses and construct models for future action.
